What Is Differin Gel

Differin is a widely used topical medicine for treating acne, spots and papulopustular acne. Its active ingredient is adapalene 0.1%, and it works by targeting the underlying causes of acne. In the UK, it is commonly used in dermatology and acne care as a topical treatment prescribed or recommended for ongoing skin management.

Adapalene is the active ingredient in Differin. It is a synthetic analogue of retinoic acid and belongs to a group of medicines used on the skin. Chemically, adapalene is a naphthoic acid derivative. It selectively binds to retinoic acid receptors in the nuclei of epithelial cells and stimulates keratinocyte differentiation. It does not bind to the cytosolic proteins that are sensitive to retinoic acid, which is why it tends to cause less pronounced irritation.

Adapalene speeds up the final stage of keratinocyte transformation into keratinised scales and weakens the bonds between cells in the epidermis. This helps the skin shed dead cells more quickly, thins the outer skin layer and reduces comedone formation. The medicine also helps clear the openings of hair follicles by reducing the build-up of dead skin cells.

Where do spots, blackheads and acne come from? The processes behind them are described in detail in the medical literature. The main causes include:

  • hormonal changes in the body;
  • increased sebum production;
  • enlarged pores in the skin;
  • harmful microorganisms getting into the pores;
  • the effects of previous illnesses, skin injuries or allergic reactions.

The product helps reduce excess sebum production. Another important effect is that it helps to normalise keratinisation in the hair follicles. Dermatologists' reviews of Differin gel and cream are often very positive. Many say it is one of the most effective products available for pimples, rashes and blackheads. The same is often said of Differin-based products and other topical retinoids such as Adaklin and Klenzit, which are also used for acne.

However, one important point needs to be clarified. Differin on its own, without other medicines, may be used to help get rid of pimples, but not to treat more established acne. In those cases, it should be combined with products that contain benzoyl peroxide or an antibiotic.

Adapalene vs Tretinoin

Product Description

If you follow the official instructions, the Swiss manufacturer's cream and adapalene gel should be used in the following cases:

  • if there are comedones, severe acne or pimples
  • if pustules or papules have appeared

It is worth paying attention to the terminology. The term "acne" implies the presence of closed or open comedones on the skin. Pimples may be classified as papules, which do not contain pus, or pustules, which do contain pus.

The instructions for the medicine state that these indications apply to pimples and to mild or moderate acne. The severity of the condition is assessed individually by a specialist during a consultation. This takes into account the extent and total number of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions on the face.

There are three forms of acne:

  • A mild form of acne. At this stage, acne shows up as blackheads and pimples (comedones). With this form of the condition, oral tablets, topical retinoids, tretinoin, azelaic acid and external antibacterial agents may be prescribed. At present, tretinoin is considered one of the most effective treatments for mild acne;
  • A moderate form of acne with oily seborrhoea. In this case, treatment needs to be combined. This means tablets should be used alongside topical medicines. For example, Differin may be combined with systemic or topical antibiotics. To achieve a therapeutic effect, the treatment course should be prescribed by a doctor;
  • A severe form of acne. In the UK, the first step in treating this type of rash is a consultation with a dermatologist, beautician, endocrinologist and gynaecologist (for women). Only a joint assessment makes it possible to develop the right treatment plan. Treatment requires a systematic approach, combining medicines taken by mouth with external products such as creams, gels and ointments. If the condition is severe, treatment may include antibiotics, hormones and retinoids (products based on salicylic and azelaic acids).

What Differin (Adapalene) Gel Is Used For

The active ingredient in Differin, adapalene, has a drying, comedolytic, exfoliating and anti-inflammatory effect and helps reduce activity in the sebaceous glands. It helps prevent acne, reduces oily shine and helps keep pores clear.

Benefits:

  1. Breaks down the acne plug in the sebaceous gland and supports the process of epithelial cell renewal.
  2. Keratolytic action, meaning exfoliation of the upper layers of the skin, with a drying effect. This helps pimples dry out and clear more quickly.
  3. Anti-inflammatory effect. It helps reduce the reproduction of bacteria involved in acne.
  4. Sebum-regulating action, which reduces skin oiliness. This also reduces the environment in which bacteria can multiply.
  5. Dissolves comedones. Inflamed pimples often develop because of comedones, or clogged pores. Getting rid of comedones is one of the most important steps towards clearer-looking skin.
  6. Helps improve post-acne marks, especially spots left after acne. Suitable for sensitive skin.

Differin Acne Treatment

Differin acne gel is designed to target the causes of skin blemishes. The product has a wide range of effects:

  • exfoliation of dead skin cells from the upper layers of the skin;
  • support for skin renewal, which may make expression lines and age-related lines less noticeable;
  • improving skin firmness and smoothing the skin's texture;
  • the active ingredients in the acne gel penetrate the upper layers of the epidermis and support the natural production of elastin and collagen, while also helping to deeply cleanse and disinfect the skin.

The active substance works through the keratinisation process. This is a complex process that takes place in the upper layers of the epidermis and involves the deposition of keratin. Keratin acts as a natural barrier against various negative influences and harmful microflora.

Because Differin acne treatment helps remove the conditions that allow bacteria to multiply, the healing process may be quicker and more effective. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can also help reduce redness and improve the appearance of the skin. This may have a positive effect on confidence and self-esteem.

Before Taking This Medication

Like any targeted treatment, Differin ointment has contraindications and restrictions on use. These include:

  • an allergic reaction to any ingredient;
  • breastfeeding or pregnancy;
  • age under 12 years;
  • eczema, dermatitis or seborrhoea, although these contraindications are relative.

How To Use Differin Gel

How to use Differin gel: Differin Gel is for external use only and is best applied before bed, when the skin is actively renewing itself. Before using the product, wash your face thoroughly with soap or a cleansing foam, then dry it with a paper towel. Using light massaging movements, apply the gel or cream locally, only to the areas affected by pimples and acne. It is important not to use adapalene gel on mucous membranes, wounds, damaged skin or the lip border. Avoid getting it in the eyes.

Dosage For Differin

Apply Differin adapalene gel evenly to the affected areas of skin without rubbing, once a day before going to bed. The product should be applied to clean, dry skin. A therapeutic effect develops after 4 to 8 weeks of treatment, with sustained improvement after 3 months of treatment. Repeat courses may be recommended by a doctor. Différin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate acne as monotherapy, and for moderate acne in combination with other topical medicines (antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide) and systemic medicines (antibiotics, oral antiandrogens).

How Long To Use It

If you have oily, porous and shiny skin, you may notice the first results within a few days. Your skin may look less shiny and less greasy, but treatment still takes time. This effect may last not just for a few hours, but throughout the day, and in some cases until the next day. When it comes to the number of pimples and acne spots, monotherapy with Differin may help. The first clear results are often seen after a month of use. Pimples may clear fully in about 2.5 months, especially in more stubborn cases.

You usually see visible results only after a full course of treatment, which is at least 3 months. This length of treatment is typical when monotherapy is prescribed to get rid of pimples. If it is used as part of combination therapy, Differin should be combined with antimicrobial medicines. For example, treatment may include antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide. In most cases, effective combination therapy works faster than using a single medicine.

Areas Differin Gel Should Not Be Used On

Avoid applying the gel or cream to the eyes, lips and mucous membranes. If the medicine accidentally comes into contact with the mucous membranes of the eyes, mouth or nose, rinse thoroughly with warm water. Avoid direct sunlight, as slight skin irritation may occur. Treatment can be continued if sun exposure is kept to a minimum by using sunglasses and hats.

Using cosmetics with a drying or irritating effect on the skin, such as perfumes or alcohol-containing products, is not recommended. Differin Gel applied in the evening may be combined with acne products applied in the morning.

Differin Gel Side Effects

Differin gel side effects may include itching, redness and burning of the skin. If these symptoms appear, stop using the cream, then restart it after some time. During the first 14 days, the medicine should not be used every day, but several times a week. Allergies may sometimes occur in people with dry, sensitive skin.

Erythema Grading Scale

Common Side Effects

If any of the side effects listed in the instructions get worse, or if you notice any side effects not listed there, tell your doctor straight away.

In the United Kingdom, one researcher who has studied adapalene is Anthony Chu, MD, Consultant Dermatologist.

Common Side Effects:

  • dry skin,
  • skin irritation,
  • a burning sensation of the skin,
  • erythema.

Uncommon Side Effects

Uncommon Side Effects:

  • allergic dermatitis (allergic contact dermatitis),
  • skin soreness,
  • swollen skin,
  • eyelid irritation,
  • erythema of the eyelids,
  • itchy eyelids,
  • swollen eyelids.

Drugs, Substances, Or Supplements Interactions

Because the medicine does not interact with oxygen and is not broken down by light, it may be used with other topical or systemic acne medicines such as clindamycin phosphate or benzoyl peroxide.

Differin During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

Clinical experience with adapalene applied to the skin during pregnancy is limited, but the available data from patients treated in early pregnancy do not show harmful effects on pregnancy or fetal health. Because the available data are limited, and because a small amount of adapalene may pass through the skin, Differin should not be used during pregnancy.

No studies have been carried out in animals or humans on whether the medicine passes into breast milk after being applied to the skin. Because systemic exposure to Differin in breastfeeding women is negligible, no effects on breastfed children are expected. Differin can be used during breastfeeding. To avoid contact between the infant and the medicine, do not apply it to the breast area while breastfeeding.

After Using The Medication

Exposure to sunlight and artificial ultraviolet light, including sunlamps, should be kept to a minimum during the use of adapalene to help prevent skin irritation. If exposure cannot be avoided, sunscreen and protective clothing are recommended for treated areas of skin.

While using Differin gel for wrinkles, it is possible to use cosmetics that do not have comedogenic or astringent properties. Differin cream contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), which may cause allergic reactions during or after treatment.

Storage

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F). Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

Disposal

Shelf life is two years. Do not freeze the cream to extend its shelf life. After the expiry date, dispose of it in line with local requirements.

Alternative Medications

If severe acne has been diagnosed, retinoids such as Differin are not prescribed, as they are unlikely to help. In this case, effective treatment would usually be systemic retinoids based on isotretinoin, which is taken by mouth. Such medicines include Acnekutan and Roaccutane.
