FAQ

Eurax (crotamiton) is an antiparasitic medicine that kills certain parasites which live on the skin or lay eggs in the skin.

Crotamiton's antiparasitic effect is linked to disruption of ionic permeability through sodium channels and inhibition of repolarization of the insect nerve cell membrane, which leads to paralysis. After cutaneous application, absorption is not more than 2%.

Possible side effects include burning or stinging, tingling, numbness, increased itching, erythema, and allergic reactions such as skin rash or swelling.

Description

Note: Images in the description are provided for informational purposes and may differ from the actual appearance of the product. Please refer to the product name, strength, active ingredients, and pharmaceutical form.

Scabies does not usually require hospital treatment. In the UK, a dermatologist will prescribe an individual treatment plan for each patient, depending on the severity of the condition and the clinical signs.

Benefits of Eurax cream

Medicines for scabies should have the following characteristics:

  • work against mites and their larvae as quickly and effectively as possible;
  • be cleared from the body quickly;
  • have minimal side effects;
  • be affordable and easy to use;
  • not stain clothes or have a strong smell.

In most cases, the skin does not react when the female mite enters the stratum corneum of the epidermis, so there is no inflammatory component in the burrow and the clinical picture is usually typical, uncomplicated scabies. On the skin, this looks like a slightly raised dirty-grey line, straight or curved, 5-7 mm long. However, an inflammatory reaction may develop later.

What Is Eurax

Eurax (crotamiton) is an antiparasitic medicine that kills certain parasites living on your skin or laying eggs in it. Even with effective treatment, it is important not only to treat the affected areas of skin but also to disinfect household items touched by the infected person to help avoid reinfection. You should use disposable gloves during treatment and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Modern products come in a range of forms and formulations. Active ingredients that may be used include:

  • sulfur;
  • permethrin;
  • benzyl benzoate.

These active ingredients paralyse the parasites' breathing and digestive functions, leading to their death. Ointments and other topical treatments are highly effective because they act directly on the affected areas. Before treatment, it is important to ventilate the room well and take care to avoid getting the medicine on mucous membranes. These medicines should be used strictly according to the instructions, and you should check the contraindications carefully when choosing a suitable treatment. Scabies can usually be treated at home, as a person's general condition is not usually affected.

Eurax is widely used to treat scabies caused by scabies mites. This intradermal parasite can get onto the skin, burrow in and begin to reproduce. As a result, scabies burrows appear, where the female lays eggs.

If used correctly, the cream should be enough for a full course of treatment. The medicine comes as a 20 g tube of cream and a 60 g lotion. Consumer feedback is generally positive, and the price is often considered low for the benefit it offers. Crotamiton is the main ingredient in Eurax cream. It helps relieve itching and works against the cause by destroying the parasite.

Drug Details

The instructions for use include a full description of Eurax lotion for scabies. If a patient has scabies, the ointment should be applied to the skin from the chin down to the lower limbs. The skin should be washed with water first. The application can be repeated after 24 hours; this should be enough to destroy the parasite.

Eurax should not be used in pregnancy unless clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor. It should also not be applied to areas of skin that are acutely inflamed, raw, weeping or actively bleeding. In addition, the medicine can cause side effects, including redness of the skin and other allergic reactions.

How To Use Eurax Lotion

Eurax lotion should be applied to the entire body, from your neck to your toes. For babies and young children in the United Kingdom, consult a physician, as safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

  • Wash your child well and dry the skin before applying it.
  • Wear disposable gloves during treatment.
  • Apply the medicine by rubbing it gently into the skin, working from top to bottom.
  • Treat carefully any areas where burrows are present.
  • Do not forget hard-to-reach areas, such as bends and skin folds.
  • Do not wash the product off before the instructions say to do so, which may be anywhere from 8 hours to 24 hours. If you wash it off your hands, remember to apply it again.
  • Explain to your child that they should not lick treated areas of skin. Small children should wear mittens.
  • Be sure to wash anything that has come into contact with the infected person, including clothes, bedding and towels. These can be washed in hot water (at least 50°C (122°F)), ironed, or sealed tightly in polyethylene and stored for at least three days, as the parasites will die without food.

Pharmacological Action

The pharmacological action of crotamiton in scabies is antiparasitic and insecticidal. It works against lice, fleas, mites (including scabies mites) and other ectoparasites of the arthropod family; it reduces their development and causes the death of larvae, nits and reproducing parasites.

Eurax has scabicidal and antipruritic actions, although the exact mechanisms are not known. The pharmacokinetics of crotamiton and the degree of systemic absorption after topical use have not been determined.

Indications

The main sign of scabies is itching, which gets worse after a hot bath and at night, so sleep can become restless and disturbed. Children start scratching because of an allergic reaction. Itching usually begins a few weeks after infection, while with reinfection the first signs may appear within a couple of days. The incubation period for scabies is usually 4 to 6 weeks. If the patient has had this infection before, symptoms may appear within 1 to 4 days.

Scabies can often be recognised by the many small red spots and papules. In children under 2 years old, the rash most often appears on the palms, soles, head and neck. In older children, rashes appear between the fingers, in the folds of the wrists and elbows, and on the waist, thighs, buttocks and genitals.

Mites not only live on the human body but also lay eggs there, forming small tunnels visible on the skin. These are thin, wavy grey or white lines that can look like pencil marks.

Scratching itchy areas can lead to new infections, inflammation and redness. At the first signs of scabies, parents should stop self-treating and contact a doctor so the symptoms can be relieved and the right treatment prescribed.

Dosage And Administration

Scabies: Massage thoroughly into the skin over the whole body, from the chin down, paying particular attention to all folds and creases. A second application is advisable 24 hours later. Clothing and bed linen should be changed the following morning. A cleansing bath should be taken 48 hours after the last application.

Crotamiton Side Effects

Local reactions: burning or stinging, tingling, numbness, increased itching, erythema and allergic reactions (skin rashes, swelling).

Contraindications of topical crotamiton (Eurax/Crotan):

  • hypersensitivity to crotamiton (or allergy to product ingredients) or primary irritation from topical medicines;
  • do not apply to acutely inflamed skin or to raw or weeping surfaces until the acute inflammation has settled;
  • avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.

It is also important to sanitise the affected area of the body when treating this infectious disease. As a person's general condition is usually not affected by the itching, hospital treatment is not required. Instead, special skin solutions can be applied at home. In many cases, sprays for scabies are used to help relieve itching and redness.

It is important to remember that each treatment has its own instructions and contraindications. This should be taken into account, as allergic reactions or other symptoms may occur if these recommendations are not followed.

Precautions While Using Eurax Cream

In the U.K., buy scabies medication only after consulting your doctor. It is essential to sanitise the affected area when treating this infectious disease.

Follow the preventive recommendations below:

  • The clothes of an infected person may need chemical treatment. In some cases, regular washing may not be enough.
  • The infected person should have separate utensils to avoid contact with healthy people.
  • It is important to use disposable gloves after procedures. When treatment has finished, wash your hands well with antibacterial soap.
  • Keep all scabies treatments together in one place.

If one family member develops scabies, the chance of it spreading to other household members increases greatly. Following these general prevention steps and using crotamiton cream may help reduce this risk and support recovery. Avoid getting this medicine in the eyes or mouth.

Pregnancy and Lactation

In the UK prescribing information, Eurax is not classified under the former U.S. Pregnancy Category C system. Animal reproduction studies have not been carried out, and it is not known whether Eurax can cause harm to an unborn baby when applied to the skin during pregnancy. It should be used only if clearly needed and on the advice of a doctor. There is no established safety information for use while breastfeeding, so speak to your healthcare professional; some clinicians may advise temporarily stopping breastfeeding during treatment.

Overdose

After accidental swallowing of the emulsion, a case of seizure has been reported. It was treated with gastric lavage, activated charcoal, diazepam and metoclopramide (with a plasma concentration of 34 ng/ml of Crotamiton). When applied to the skin, pallor and cyanosis were noted in a newborn infant.

Eurax Cream Price

You can buy anti-itch treatment online to help deal with scabies mites on the hands, feet and other parts of the body. Patients can choose an odourless ointment or another dosage form. Online pharmacies offer many different medicines. They can generally be compared by:

  • Effectiveness - if you follow the instructions, the condition may clear more quickly;
  • Safety - quick elimination from the body and minimal side effects;
  • Affordability - lower cost due to inexpensive ingredients;
  • Ease of use - easy to apply and spreads evenly over the hands, feet and other areas.

Some treatments are odourless and do not stain clothes, which can make them more comfortable to use. Acaricidal medicines for scabies mites vary in how long they are used for. Sprays, creams and emulsions also differ in consistency and in the concentration of active ingredients. So, one cream may be used for 3-4 days to complete treatment, while another may need up to 8 days. One of the most effective ways to help prevent scabies is the chemical treatment of all belongings used by the infected person.

Eurax cream and Eurax lotion, which are widely available in online pharmacy catalogues, may help you deal with this irritation more quickly and reduce discomfort.

It is very easy to buy Eurax lotion online. However, see your doctor first. Only a qualified specialist can diagnose the condition, assess how severe it is and prescribe an effective treatment to relieve the symptoms.

Eurax Cream Alternatives

There are several alternative creams and treatments for people who cannot tolerate Eurax itch cream. Anthisan cream or HC45 cream can be used for itching, stings and insect bites. Eurax is also available in combination with a steroid cream called Eurax HC cream.

Another medicine that may be used is Spregal. Its active ingredient is Esdepaletrin, a neurotoxic insect poison that disrupts cation exchange across nerve cell membranes. The second component, piperonyl butoxide, increases the effect of Esdepaletrin and reduces the risk of resistance to this scabicide.

Nittyfor Crem is suitable for the treatment of scabies. Its active ingredient is permethrin. Nittyfor Crem is officially approved for the treatment of pediculosis. It is applied to limited areas of skin, and it should not be left on the skin for more than 40 minutes.

Allergy medicines or oral antihistamines can be effective for itching. In rare cases, a doctor may prescribe steroid ointments containing glucocorticoids, such as Hydrocortisone. If infected rashes or wounds appear where the skin has been scratched, antibiotic ointments may be used. Neomycin and bacitracin have a broad spectrum of action. They may also be used at home on a doctor's advice.
